We are excited to introduce the 2012 NORCAL Group Annual Report. We’ve accomplished a great deal this year: three companies coming together to better serve the physician community and our agency partners.

The NORCAL Group participated as a sponsor in the 3rd Annual Black Physician Forum. The forum was held March 8th at the UC Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento, Ca. The event was titled, "Discussing Treatment Options and Prevention Measures for Cancer and the Co-Morbidity of Mental Illness in the African American Community." Attendees included physicians, medical students, academicians and a host of other professionals.
The NORCAL Group actively works to protect our companies’ insureds. Part of our mission is to influence change in our industry that benefits our insured physicians.
In support of this, Dr. Jaan Sidorov, Chair, appeared on a recent PBS TV show. The program, Need To Know, focused their "Do No Harm" episode on the impact of medical liability claims on the cost of healthcare in the US.
A recent New York Times article notes that a medical malpractice lawsuit takes an average of 2 years to resolve and 4 years from the incident event—longer if a more complicated or severe injury. In areas where tort reform removes some of the financial burden, some doctors are starting to see the toll of years spent focusing on a lawsuit—time doctors normally spend practicing medicine and helping their patients.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) moved this month to strengthen the privacy and security protections for health information established under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
The rule enhances a patient’s privacy protections, provides individuals new rights to their health information, and strengthens the government’s ability to enforce the law. The effective date for these changes is March 26, 2013. The deadline for compliance is September 23, 2013.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently made an announcement. In the event Congress fails to act and prevent the cuts to Medicare payments scheduled to become effective on January 1, 2013, CMS will be required to implement the 27% cut in the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR).
